Favourite Fishing Spots


Apollo Bay has many fishing options and is one place where you can choose between catching freshwater or salt water fish by fishing in the freshwater river and creeks or off the peer or breakwater.

Here are some of the popular places to fish.

Beach Fishing

Wild Dog Beach

Good beach fishing for Salmon and Silver Trevally using white bait or small blue bait.

Marengo and Cape Otway offer similar conditions where rock fishing can bring you Sweep, Gerfish, Snapper and King George Whiting.

Skenes Creek

King George Whiting is the fish to catch here.
Fishing from the beach just before low tide is recommended.

Kennet River and Grey River

Good fishing at evening or night.
Silver Trevally, Snapper, Salmon and Whiting in calm seas using Squid,and white bait, blue bait and pippies.
Estuary fishing is goood for Mullet and Bream.

Rock fishing is good in the Grey River.

Rivers and Creeks

Barham River

Estuary is good for Bream, Mullet and estuary Perch but this river is better known for it's Trout fishing.
Best results from wet fly or these baits: shrimp,crickets and worms.

Wye River

On the south side of the Wye River Store.
Rising tide brings Garfish while you can hook Whiting and Snapper on the falling tide.
Estuary fishing in the mouth of the river brings Mullet and Bream.

Bait: Ask a local what is working at the time or go for peeled prawns on a number 8 - 10 hook.

Fish off the peer to catch what ever is going at the time. Ask the locals or the bait shop but usually good fishing is on the turn of the tide.
There are two boat ramps in an excellent boat harbour but ask about local coditions before launching.
Fishing insde the harbour can bring you Silver Trevally, Mackeral and other varieties.
The presence of seals or sting rays could mean poor fishing so bring the kids to watch them if they are around.
